A deer running in front of a Ludington school bus this morning caused the driver to brake and the bus to slide off into a ditch along Jebavy Drive between Fisher and Dewey roads.
Ludington Area Schools Superintendent Andrea Large said there were two students on the bus when the incident occurred and said no one was injured.
Large also said a replacement bus was quickly dispatched to the route and the elementary school children on the route did make it to school on time while the middle school and high school students were 10 to 15 minutes late.
“The kids were safe and we ran another bus to pick up kids and finish the route,” she said.
Today is the first day of school for Ludington’s children since Dec. 20 — or 19 days ago.
“It’s exciting to have the kids back and the teachers and students are excited to be back,” said Large, who spent time this morning at the middle school and high school.
She said Ludington Area Schools Transportation Director Jim Kastelin checked area roads early this morning — about 4-4:30 a.m. — and decided they were good enough for running buses.
