RIVERTON TWP. — A boat burst into flames on Bass Lake Friday afternoon and sunk after burning.
The three people on board when the fire broke out were able to escape without serious injury.
The incident, which occurred about 4 p.m. Friday, did leave a film of gasoline over part of the lake and firefighters discussed how they may be able to make it disperse by using a brand of dish detergent.
The boat’s owner, Jim Hartney of Grand Haven, told the Daily News he had filled the boat in Grand Haven and brought it to Bass Lake, where he put it in the water and worked to start it.
“We had the blower going and I had it cranking and all of a sudden it went up in flames,” Hartney told the Daily News about the 1997 20-foot Crownline boat.
His hair, arms and legs were singed by the fire but Hartney did not go to a hospital for treatment. He and two others were able to escape from the burning boat.
Responding to the fire were the Riverton Fire Department and Mason County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.
