John Fishel, 34, of Hart remained in critical condition Monday at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids after being struck by a 16-year-old Hart girl driving her vehicle near a bus stop Oct. 25.
Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast said that detectives were able to conclude that the girl’s phone was not functioning during the accident and is being ruled out as a cause of distraction in the accident. Due to her age, the sheriff’s office is not releasing her name.
The original accident occurred at 7:10 a.m. in Weare Township.
Mast said the accident occurred at the site of a school bus loading zone on Monroe Road east of Oceana Drive.
“The pedestrian just dropped his children off to be loaded on the bus. The bus driver, who had all of the emergency lights on, motioned to have the parent step across the road to speak with him about pick-up times,” Mast said. “When the parent stepped away to cross back over (the road), a westbound vehicle struck him right in front of the bus.”
Life EMS transported the man from the scene to Mercy Health Partners Lakeshore Campus in Shelby where he was then airlifted by AeroMed to Spectrum Health.
The bus belongs to Hart Public Schools.
