The hoops will soon be set up and the court lines will be drawn for the annual Ludington Gus Macker 3-on-3 Charity Basketball Tournament, and this year’s event is expected to be one of the biggest ever.
On Saturday and Sunday, for the 28th consecutive year in Ludington, the famed basketball tournament will set up along Stearns Park Beach, and the Ludington & Scottville Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event, is anticipating a large turnout, both for registered teams and attendees.
“We’re expecting about 25,000 people and we have 754 teams registered,” said Kristen Smith, event and communications coordinator for the chamber.
Chamber President and CEO Brandy Miller said the event is a major draw for Ludington — a summer event that has become a tradition for local families, as well as basketball enthusiasts from throughout the state.
“I think Gus Macker is nostalgic for a lot of families,” Miller said. “People who played in it … years ago have kids, or even grandkids, who are now playing.”
Both Miller and Smith stressed that the “charity” in the tournament’s title is something organizers take seriously.
“One of the biggest things we like to emphasize is that it’s a charity event,” Smith said. “Local sports teams and charity clubs are involved in (volunteering), and some money from concessions goes back to those (groups and clubs).”
