FiveCAP offers home weatherization assistance

Home weatherization, available through FiveCAP, Inc., assists residents in making their homes more energy-efficient, ultimately cutting down on utility costs.

This program benefits income eligible households by repairing and insulating homes which aren’t energy-efficient.

For households which qualify, an energy auditor does an assessment to check the efficiency of heating systems, water heaters and stoves, making sure they have proper combustion and no gas or carbon monoxide leaks; evaluate any infiltration and exfiltration issues; and assess levels of insulation throughout the home.

A determination is then made of what services will provide the maximum amount of energy savings for the homeowner.

Depending on the needs, services can vary from home to home, and include, but are not limited to air sealing (caulking, weather-stripping and sealing holes and cracks); insulation of side walls, attics and foundations; proper venting of clothes dryers and exhaust from bath/kitchen fans; replacing windows and doors; and installation of safety measures such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.

Home owners also may qualify for major home repair, such as replacement of water heaters, furnaces and refrigerators, as well as roof repair, if necessary to preserve or install insulation.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, this service is free to qualifying households, eligible at 200 percent or below Federal Poverty Level, and is available to home owners and rental units. FiveCAP provides this service year-round in Mason, Manistee, Lake and Newaygo counties.

Applicants are required to provide:

• Proof of ownership (deed or title), land contract, or landlord agreement.

• Documents for prior three months of income for all members of the household over age 18;

• Full name, date of birth and social security number for each household member;

• Receipt of current paid property taxes, which cannot be in arrears or delinquent; and

• Most recent electric and heat bills with account numbers.
