A 52-year-old Wooster, Ohio man was transported and admitted to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon with non-life threatening injuries Monday after losing control of a pick-up truck towing a fifth-wheel camper on southbound US-31 near Buchanan Road in Shelby Township.
According to Michigan State Police Trooper Conner Crutchfield, the 11:21 a.m. accident occurred as work crews for Give ‘Em Brake safety were placing road closed signs to alert motorists to pending road work when traffic began backing up. Crutchfield said the Ohio man was driving a 2011 GMC pick-up and was towing a 42-foot fifth-wheel camper when he came up on stopped traffic and wasn’t able to stop in time. Crutchfield said the Ohio man went between a stopped vehicle on the right side and the work crew after which the Ohio man lost control of the pick-up, overturning the camper and detaching it. The truck then hit the side of the Buchanan Road overpass, Crutchfield said, and the truck fell 20-25 feet to Buchanan Road below.
The state police were assisted at the scene by Life EMS, the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office and Hart and Shelby Fire Departments. The Michigan Department of Transportation was contacted to inspect the bridge. The expressway was closed for approximately 90 minutes.
