TrueNorth Community Services is a host site for free tax preparation services for low- to moderate-income households, starting Feb. 3 and running through April 15.

TrueNorth is partnering with Goodwill Industries of West Michigan’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Services for West Michigan (VITA West Michigan) for the 2020 tax season. Hours at the TrueNorth Service Center, 6308 S. Warner Ave. (M-82) in Fremont, are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays.

To qualify, individuals must have a household income below $60,000. Including TrueNorth, VITA West Michigan offers seven sites in Newaygo, Muskegon and Oceana counties.

For an appointment, call Michigan 211 at (844) 875-9211 or 2-1-1. Appointment coordinators verify eligibility and inform filers about the necessary documents required for their appointment.

“Eligible filers can opt for a full-service one-on-one appointment with an IRS-certified volunteer; they can choose self-service with assistance and free use of computers and software; or they can file from home using the online tax program www.myfreetaxes.com,” said Jasam Brett Layne-Roy, Tax Program Coordinator for Goodwill Industries of West Michigan.

Since 2006, Goodwill and VITA West Michigan have collaborated with TrueNorth to provide free tax preparation, helping filers maximize their returns by identifying significant tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

In the last three years, VITA West Michigan has prepared more than 8,000 tax returns and returned over $10 million to the community, including nearly $4 million in 2019. In addition, VITA West Michigan has averaged over 2,000 hours of volunteer participation from more than 40 volunteers, including 18 local students.
