Ludington

James Harold Miller, 74, of Ludington, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Jim was born Aug. 2, 1944 in Ludington, the son of Raymond John Miller and Kathryn Louise Pehrson. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in Alaska and at Fort Knox, Ky. reaching the rank of sergeant. In the 1970s through 1990s, he was very active in coaching baseball and basketball for his sons’ teams from elementary school through junior high. In 1966, he began his career at the City of Ludington. In those early years, he also founded a successful business, Miller Installations. Jim juggled the responsibilities of a career, business and family, rising through the ranks until in 1988 he was selected city manager — a position he had for nearly 15 years. His time as city manager oversaw significant positive changes in Ludington highlighted by the creation of much of the public and private marina areas that are now enjoyed by residents and visitors. Jim also has the distinction to have served as the village manager of Pentwater.

Jim is survived by his three sons; Richard “Rick” Miller of Howell, Todd (Shannon) Miller of Ludington, Mark (Barbara) Miller of East Amherst, N.Y.; and their mother, Mary Jo Miller of Ludington. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; two sisters, Sue Stapleton of Grand Rapids and Carol Johnson of Ludington; and his good friend, Bob Manglitz.
