From Peacocks to Cardinals and Elvis to Barbie

The annual Celebration of the Trees will be this coming week at the Shelby Area District Library, and although the entries are always a surprise, one thing’s for sure: one of them will be Mary Ann Carey’s.

Carey, a slim, lively woman who has lived in Shelby since 1968 and devotes much of her life to her community, has had a tree at the event for 23 years. It all started back in 1995, when she was running her daycare center, the Sweet Pea Patch.

“My kids ranged from 2 ½ to 8 years old,” she recalls. “I wanted them to give back to the library in a fun way. So we started making trees with our own ornaments.”
