ALLENDALE — Pentwater finished strong at the weekend’s Division 4 state golf tournament in Allendale, placing sixth in the state with a two-day score of 687 and coming in only one stroke behind Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart for fifth. Kalamazoo Hackett claimed the state title with a score of 652.
The Falcons closed out the tournament with a great second day, shooting a team total of 336, which ranked third of Saturday’s rounds. Pentwater’s day-one score of 351 had it in seventh place when Friday’s action concluded.
“For the first time at state for this team, we are thrilled with our accomplishments,” Pentwater coach Alicia Kolenda said.
Gannon McDonough led the Falcons at the tournament, playing solid golf both days to shoot a two-day total of 79-80-159, coming in 11th place as an individual. Each of McDonough’s teammates lowered their scores from the first day to the second. Senior Seth Matulis performed well and closed out his career with a solid total of 85-84-169.
Drew Kolenda, the only eighth-grader playing at the state meet, logged the third-best team score for Pentwater with a 90-88-178, and Will Kolenda rebounded from a tough first day to finish with a 97-84-181. Mackenzie Breitner, too, finished strong and posted a two-day score of 116-93-209.
“We are all so proud of our season and already planning on how to attack state again next year,” coach Kolenda said.
