MUSKEGON — Pentwater’s golf team came up huge Thursday at the Division 4 regional meet at Muskegon Country Club, bringing home the regional title and a berth in the state finals.

“I’m so proud that we all played as a team,” Pentwater coach Alicia Kolenda said. “Shot for shot, it was an amazing team win.”

Pentwater edged Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart by four strokes, 334-338, for the title. Western Michigan Christian shot a 345 to also earn a state berth.

All five Falcons to go to the regional meet scored in the top 20 individually. Gannon McDonough led the team with a 79, the second-best score of the day, just one shot behind Manistee Catholic’s John Slivka. Will Kolenda wasn’t far behind, shooting an 82 and coming in eighth overall. Seth Matulis shot an 86 and Drew Kolenda added an 87. Mackenzie Breitner chipped in a score of 89.

“We look forward to going to state as a team for the first time for all of these athletes,” coach Kolenda said. “It’s a great win for our conference and our school to be heading to state.”

Hesperia competed at the regional as well and placed 15th with a score of 515. Jonathan Castillo led the Panthers with a score of 115. Weston Valdes added a 123, Connor Baird shot a 130, and Sennett Garrett had a 149.
