Karen and Walter Urick of Hart celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 26 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island with their children and their families. Walter and Karen (Fick) were married in Battle Creek, Mich. and the same thunderstorm that hit their wedding went on to dampen Lee and Elaine Curtis’ wedding reception in nearby Charlotte, Mich. Eleanor (Fick) Robinson was her sister’s matron of honor and John Urick, brother of the groom, served as the best man. Coffee, punch and wedding cake were served in the church parlors. Immediately following the reception, a honeymoon trip was taken to Niagara Falls and Expo ‘67 in Montreal, Canada. Upon the couples return, an old-fashion shivaree took place at their residence in the former Dr. Nicholson house in downtown Hart. Police sirens, flashing lights and sounds like gun shots announced the invasion of many friends and well-wishers. The happy guests stayed until 3:30 a.m. Tired, the newlyweds finally went up to their bedroom only to find that someone had short-sheeted their bed and poured rice in it, a mystery that still remains unsolved.
